Perhaps you’ve returned from some much-needed R&R time away from work only to discover that…
Security guarding services are paramount when it comes to consistent protection of people, possessions and property. In South Africa, as opportunistic crime remains prevalent, various types of trained security officers are required in different sectors of society. Security guards are essential almost everywhere – from industrial areas, commercial business parks or manufacturing areas to residential estates, gated communities and freestanding homes. No matter where they are positioned, the responsibility of every security guard remains the same: to protect assets by observing, patrolling, reporting and protecting. Let’s take a look at seven different types of guards and what their specific focus is.
7 different types of security guarding services
1. Unarmed guards
Unarmed security guards don’t carry any weapons. Their physical presence on a property deters criminals and promotes peace, as they continuously monitor the environment for security threats. Unarmed guards are typically in charge of patrolling the property, controlling crowds, manning access points, enforcing regulations, searching visitors and performing other general security tasks. Most importantly, they will alert other security personnel and raise an alarm if any security threats are detected.
2. Access control guards
As mentioned, access control guards are unarmed and stationed at access points to manage who gains access to the guarded property. They typically perform security checks before letting any vehicles or individuals in. For example, vehicle licences are recorded, identity documents are scanned and boots and bags are checked.
3. Event guards
Event security guards are hired to maintain safety and security at events. They are responsible for controlling crowds and maintaining order. Event guards are usually unarmed, but some events require armed guards.
4. Armed guards
Armed security guards carry weapons, which is important when more stringent security is demanded in more threatening circumstances. You will typically find them in areas where there is a lot of crime and when people’s lives are in danger, and they are usually hired by organisations dealing with high-value products or services. Armed security guards often carry guns, which means they have undergone firearm training and have attained the required firearm license.
5. Retail guards
Retail security guards are stationed outside and inside retail stores to keep employees and customers safe, as well as deter and apprehend anyone who attempts to shoplift. They may also be trained to offer customer service, first aid and crisis management. These guards are usually unarmed, but it depends on the value of the retail items.
6. Private guards
Private security guards or bodyguards are assigned to protect a specific person or group of people, e.g. government officials, celebrities and other VIPs. These guards are usually armed.
7. Patrolling guards
Patrolling guards move around properties or areas on foot, horse or bicycle or in vehicles (e.g. cars or golf carts) where security presence is required. They can be unarmed or armed – depending on the level of security needed. These guards continuously patrol the premises to monitor the environment for any suspicious activity.
