What Is Human Detection Technology?

Human detection is a computer vision-based artificial intelligence technology often employed in security surveillance. It refers to the task of locating all instances of human beings present in images, videos or surveillance footage by AI. It’s a type of object detection where, in this instance, the object being identified is a human being. As with object detection, an algorithm detects a human being, separates it from the background and classifies the object as “human”. It’s difficult to detect people because they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, etc. For the technology to work effectively, the algorithms need to have a large amount of visual data to process. Let’s take a look at some ways it’s used.

5 ways human detection technology can be used

1. Human analysis

Once a human is detected, an algorithm can scan faces, analyse characteristics (e.g. eye or hair colour) and compare them to existing databases to aid in the identification of people. Access control systems and access automation rely heavily on this technology. Face recognition and identification are thus fundamental in keeping properties safe and secure.

Your first step is to set up a CCTV system on your property. AI security cameras (a must-have for 10 reasons) will detect humans, including anyone on high alert, and quickly notify you of the invasion. Early detection is important when trying to stay one step ahead of criminals

2. Weapon analysis

Once AI has detected people, an algorithm can then pick up on whether individuals are carrying around any weapons or other dangerous objects. This means that prohibited weapons can be swiftly confiscated.

3. Safety analysis

Human detection technology is invaluable in identifying any occupational health and safety issues. For example, this is critical on construction sites where the wearing of hard hats is fundamental, or during pandemics like COVID when the wearing of masks was essential. Off site monitoring is one effective way of maintaining the overall safety and security of a property. And improved work productivity is just one advantageous result of monitoring off site.

4. Movement analysis

Human detection technology observes how people move around, and it helps to predict what routes they will travel along. This helps with the planning and improvement of pedestrian traffic flow, for example in retail and public transport.

5. Behaviour analysis

Similar to movement analysis, AI can assist in the analysis of people’s behavioural patterns and help predict what they will do next. It is also used effectively in conjunction with visitor management systems like V PASS, which has many advantages, including that of providing increased insight into visitors and visitor activity.

The application of human detection technology in the security industry is pivotal. As the technology evolves and advances, it will inevitably continue playing an effective role in maintaining the safety of people, possessions and properties.
